Raven's Joy Basketry

Something special happens when weaving a basket. It becomes an all involving experience, I embark on an interplay. My hands are engaged in holding, moving and dancing with the unique gifts of nature's beauty. Using learned patterns, designs and techniques, the different materials emerge into unique forms. While I have developed a familiarity with the practice for over 20 years, sometimes I still feel like a beginner to the art. There is so much to learn.

 

Making my first basket was a truly joyous experience, a nourishment for my soul. From then on I have been committed to learn more about basketry, to practice the art, and to promote it. I continue to find a deep joy in making baskets.

 

My pursuit is to honour Spirit as it presents in each basket and to have the sensitivity to listen to that which comes. I delight in finding out the stories of old time basket makers from various regions and traditions. Their work inspires and lifts my heart. I give thanks to all who have taught basket weaving and to all who continue to teach this tradition.
